Divorce in cooperatively breeding long-tailed tits: a consequence of inbreeding avoidance?

The decision of whether to divorce a breeding partner between reproductive attempts can significantly affect individual fitness. In this paper, we report that 63% of surviving pairs of long-tailed tits Aegithalos caudatus divorced between years. We examine three likely explanations for the high divorce rate in this cooperative breeder. The 'better option' hypothesis predicts that divorce and re-pairing increases an individual's reproductive success. However, divorcees did not secure better partners or more helpers and there was no improvement in their reproductive success following divorce. The 'inbreeding avoidance' hypothesis predicts that females should disperse from their family group to avoid breeding with philopatric sons. The observed pattern of divorce was consistent with this hypothesis because, in contrast to the usual avian pattern, divorce was typical for successful pairs (81%) and less frequent in unsuccessful pairs (36-43%). The 'forced divorce' hypothesis predicts that divorce increases as the number of competitors increases. The pattern of divorce among failed breeders was consistent with this hypothesis, but it fails to explain the overall occurrence of divorce because divorcees rarely re-paired with their partners' closest competitors. We discuss long-tailed tits' unique association between divorce and reproductive success in the context of dispersal strategies for inbreeding avoidance

Exploring negative feedback – is there a positive side?

This article considers student feedback and its interpretation in relation to developing students' personal development planning. At the outset of professional education required values and behaviours might not be in evidence. Student feedback can be used as a point for learning so that values and preferences that are not a ‘given’ can be given the space needed to enable communication skills, empathy and compassion to grow. We should anticipate that not everyone has these at the outset of professional education and honesty in identifying through feedback what is lacking is a good starting point to develop individualised student support

Kinetics of Thymocyte Subset Development and Selection Revealed by Cyclosporin A Treatment

Cyclosporin A (CsA) inhibits the development of mature thymocytes from their CD4+ CD8+ precursors, but may allow autoreactive cells to mature. Using 3-color flow cytometry, we have followed the progressive development of thymocytes, including potentially autoreactive cells, during CsA treatment. Numbers of CD4+ CD8+ CD3high thymocytes dropped immediately, suggesting that the generation of these mature thymocyte precursors, normally dependent upon positive selection, was inhibited by CsA. Numbers of CD4- CD8+ thymocytes also declined rapidly, but CD4- CD8+ thymocytes were unaffected lfor 2 days, suggesting that the mature single-positive subsets are not symmetrically derived from a common GsA-sensitive precursor. An exceptional subset of CD8 SP thymocytes, expressing CD45RA, did not respond to CsA for about 10 days, indicating that they are distantly derived from a CsA-sensitive precursor. Apoptosis of TCR-Vβ3+ thymocytes caused by Mtυ-6, quantified according to the down-regulation of CD4 and CD8 on immature thymocytes, was partially inhibited by CsA, to maximal effect within 24 hours. This did not, however, facilitate their development into mature thymocytes

Variability in the growth, feeding and condition of barramundi (Lates calcarifer Bloch) in a northern Australian coastal river and impoundment

Lates calcarifer supports important fisheries throughout tropical Australia. Community-driven fish stocking has resulted in the creation of impoundment fisheries and supplemental stocking of selected wild riverine populations. Using predominantly tag-recapture methods, condition assessment and stomach flushing techniques, this study compared the growth of stocked and wild L. calcarifer in a tropical Australian river (Johnstone River) and stocked fish in a nearby impoundment (Lake Tinaroo). Growth of L. calcarifer in the Johnstone River appeared resource-limited, with juvenile fish in its lower freshwater reaches feeding mainly on small aytid shrimp and limited quantities of fish. Growth was probably greatest in estuarine and coastal areas than in the lower freshwater river. Fish in Lake Tinaroo, where prey availability was greater, grew faster than either wild or stocked fish in the lower freshwater areas of the Johnstone River. Growth of L. calcarifer was highly seasonal with marked declines in the cooler months. This was reflected in both stomach fullness and the percentage of fish with empty stomachs but the condition of L. calcarifer was similar across most sites. In areas where food resources appear stretched, adverse effects on resident L. calcarifer populations and their attendant prey species should be minimised through cessation of, or more conservative, stocking practices

Higgs bosons near 125 GeV in the NMSSM with constraints at the GUT scale

We study the NMSSM with universal Susy breaking terms (besides the Higgs sector) at the GUT scale. Within this constrained parameter space, it is not difficult to find a Higgs boson with a mass of about 125 GeV and an enhanced cross section in the diphoton channel. An additional lighter Higgs boson with reduced couplings and a mass <123 GeV is potentially observable at the LHC. The NMSSM-specific Yukawa couplings lambda and kappa are relatively large and tan(beta) is small, such that lambda, kappa and the top Yukawa coupling are of order 1 at the GUT scale. The lightest stop can be as light as 105 GeV, and the fine-tuning is modest. WMAP constraints can be satisfied by a dominantly higgsino-like LSP with substantial bino, wino and singlino admixtures and a mass of ~60-90 GeV, which would potentially be detectable by XENON100.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figure
